Israeli Soldiers Killed in Lebanon Offensive as Death Toll Nears 400

Two Israeli soldiers have been killed during Israel's latest military offensive in Lebanon, which has now left nearly 400 people dead. These fatalities mark the first military deaths for Israel since it intensified hostilities against Hezbollah in Lebanon over a week ago.

Details of the Soldiers' Deaths

According to Israeli media reports, both soldiers died when a rocket launched by militants struck their regiment. The incident occurred as bulldozers were attempting to free a stuck tank. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has not provided immediate further details on the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

One of the soldiers has been identified as 38-year-old Maher Khatar, from a village in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights, predominantly inhabited by ethnic Druze. The IDF has withheld the name of the second soldier pending notification of his family.

Escalating Violence in Southern Lebanon

Violence along the Israel-Lebanon border has escalated significantly since the United States launched military action against Iran more than a week ago. Israel has been conducting airstrikes and a ground offensive in southern Lebanon, with recent bombing raids targeting the town of Sir El Gharbiyeh on Sunday morning.

Local authorities reported that these strikes resulted in 14 residents killed and six wounded in a single day. Saadallah Maatouk, the village's mayor, stated, "14 people were killed and six were wounded. We are used to it; this is Israel, and whatever happens, it will not impact us." Another resident claimed that all the deceased were women and children, amid widespread destruction from the airstrikes.

Humanitarian Impact and Broader Conflict

Lebanon's health minister announced on Sunday that among the 394 killed since the conflict began, 83 are children. The toll reflects the severe humanitarian impact of the ongoing clashes between Israel and Hezbollah militant groups.

In a related development, Israel's military has been carrying out an operation in the southern Lebanon town of Nabi Chat to search for the remains of Israeli navigator Ron Arad, who disappeared in the region in 1986. Israeli forces entered the town and excavated a grave in a cemetery as part of this mission, which resulted in at least 41 deaths and 40 injuries, according to Lebanon's health ministry.

Hezbollah and local fighters engaged in clashes with Israeli forces during this operation, with Israel's air force conducting 40 airstrikes to facilitate the withdrawal of ground personnel. The Israeli military reported on Sunday that it had struck over 600 targets in Lebanon and 3,400 targets in Iran since the violence in the Middle East escalated.
