Israeli Airstrikes Kill 11 in Gaza Amid Ceasefire Violations
Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have resulted in the deaths of at least 11 people, according to local officials, with strikes targeting a tent encampment housing displaced families and other locations. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the action was a response to ceasefire violations by Hamas, as a fragile truce between the two sides continues to unravel.
Escalation of Violence
The latest strikes occurred just days before the first meeting of President Donald Trump's controversial Board of Peace, highlighting the timing of the escalation. Medics in Gaza reported that an Israeli strike on a tent encampment killed at least four people, while health officials said another strike in Khan Younis, in the southern part of the territory, killed five more.
Additionally, airstrikes targeted what was believed to be a commander of the Islamic Jihad group, an ally of Hamas, in the Tel Al-Hawa neighborhood of Gaza City. An IDF official described the strikes as "precise" and in compliance with international law, asserting that Hamas had repeatedly violated the ceasefire agreement established in October.
Humanitarian Crisis and Accusations
Since the October ceasefire, more than 570 Palestinians have been killed, according to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry, underscoring the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem accused Israel of committing a new "massacre" against displaced Palestinians, as both sides continue to trade blame for alleged violations of the ceasefire deal.
In a related development, Nasser Hospital in Gaza condemned a decision by Doctors Without Borders (MSF) to withdraw from operations due to security concerns. MSF cited serious threats from armed men, while the hospital attributed the increase in armed presence to civilian police efforts aimed at protecting patients and staff.
The situation remains tense, with the international community closely monitoring the fallout from these airstrikes and the broader implications for peace efforts in the region.
