Statement on X

In a post on the social media platform X, von der Leyen declared: 'Russia's public threats against our Baltic States are completely unacceptable. Let there be no doubt: a threat against one Member State is a threat against our entire Union.'

She further emphasized that Russia and Belarus bear direct responsibility for drones that endanger the lives and security of people on the EU's eastern flank. 'Europe will respond with unity and strength,' she wrote, adding that the EU will continue reinforcing the security of its eastern flank with strong collective defence and preparedness at every level.

Context of the Statement

Von der Leyen's remarks come amid heightened tensions between Russia and NATO member states, particularly the Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The European Commission president's statement underscores the EU's commitment to defending its member states against any form of aggression or intimidation.

The EU has consistently supported Ukraine in its conflict with Russia and has imposed multiple sanctions on Moscow. The latest threats against the Baltics are seen as part of a broader pattern of Russian assertiveness in the region.

EU's Response

The European Union is expected to coordinate a unified response, potentially including increased military presence in the Baltics and further diplomatic measures. Von der Leyen's statement signals that the EU will not tolerate any threats to its sovereignty or territorial integrity.
