Border Force Intercepts £80 Million Cocaine Shipment at Essex Port
Border Force officers have made a massive seizure of cocaine with an estimated street value of £80 million at an Essex port. The one-tonne haul was discovered at London Gateway Port on Friday, prompting an immediate investigation by the National Crime Agency (NCA).
Shipment Bound for Norway, Not the UK
Authorities believe the United Kingdom was not the intended final destination for the drugs. The vessel carrying the cocaine was en route to Norway, indicating a sophisticated international trafficking operation. The shrink-wrapped drugs were concealed inside multiple holdalls within a shipping container that originated in Panama.
The container also held a legitimate cover load of ceramics and kitchenware, a common tactic used by criminal organisations to disguise illicit shipments. This meticulous concealment method highlights the advanced strategies employed by drug traffickers to evade detection.
NCA Lauds Seizure as Major Blow to Organised Crime
NCA senior investigating officer Paul Orchard praised the interception, stating, "This was a fantastic seizure by our colleagues at Border Force, and taking this amount of cocaine out of circulation will have deprived the organised criminals involved of millions in profits." The operation represents a significant disruption to the financial operations of international drug syndicates.
Record-Breaking Drug Seizures in the UK
This seizure occurs amidst a backdrop of escalating drug interceptions across the United Kingdom. Police recorded 23,706 cocaine seizures in the year leading up to March 2025, marking a 13% increase from the previous period. Furthermore, Border Force and police collectively intercepted drugs on a staggering 269,000 occasions, a 24% rise compared to the year before.
The recent discovery follows another major operation at Southampton Docks, where 943 kilograms of cocaine valued at approximately £75 million were confiscated from a shipping container. These consecutive large-scale seizures underscore the intensified efforts by UK authorities to combat the influx of narcotics.
The ongoing investigations by the NCA aim to trace the origins and networks behind this shipment, with a focus on dismantling the organised crime groups responsible.
