Gunmen have stormed a hostel in South Africa's capital, Pretoria, killing at least eleven people in a horrific early morning shooting. Among the dead are a three-year-old child, a twelve-year-old boy, and a sixteen-year-old girl.
Scene of Carnage in Early Hours
Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed the devastating toll from the attack. A total of 25 people were shot during the violent incident. While ten victims died at the scene, one later succumbed to their injuries in hospital. Fourteen other people were wounded and have been taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
Illegal Shebeens a Persistent Problem
South African authorities highlighted the ongoing challenge posed by unlicensed bars, known locally as shebeens. These establishments, which often sell substandard homebrewed alcohol, are frequently linked to violent crime. "What I can tell you is that these illegal shebeens are really giving us a problem as the police," Mathe told the eNCA news broadcaster. "A lot of murders are being reported at these illegal establishments."
Manhunt for Three Suspects Underway
Forensic and ballistic experts have been deployed to the hostel to gather evidence. Police have launched an urgent search for those responsible. "We are on a manhunt. For now, we are looking for three suspects," stated Mathe. The investigation remains active as officers work to piece together the events that led to the deadly assault.
The attack underscores the severe issues of gun violence and the proliferation of illegal drinking dens in parts of South Africa. The community in Pretoria is now left to mourn the senseless loss of life, including its youngest and most vulnerable residents.
