A thirty-year-old man has been convicted of sexually abusing five young children who were under his care at a nursery in Bristol, in a case that has been described by prosecutors as "every parent's nightmare." Nathan Bennett was found guilty of eight serious offences, including rape, against children aged just two and three years old.
Pattern of Predatory Behaviour Uncovered
Bristol Crown Court heard how Bennett, from Corston near Bath, systematically won the trust of young boys at the Partou King Street nursery by showering them with excessive affection. The prosecution argued that his behaviour demonstrated "a certain level of predation," as he used his position as an early years practitioner to groom vulnerable children.
In addition to the eight convictions, Bennett had previously pleaded guilty to thirteen other less serious charges relating to four of the boys. The court was told that parents had raised concerns on three separate occasions during the six months before Bennett was finally apprehended, noting his overly affectionate manner and tendency to kiss boys on the cheeks.
Critical CCTV Evidence Leads to Arrest
The abuse came to light in February 2025 when a nursery manager observed Bennett on CCTV placing his hand down the trousers of a child. He was immediately sent home and the police were contacted. This intervention ended a period of systematic abuse that had begun when Bennett started working at the nursery in July 2024.
During the emotional trial, one mother described the horrifying moment her son disclosed that he had been sexually abused by a male nursery worker. "I was horrified," she told the jury, explaining how her son became sad and withdrawn following the incidents.
Disturbing Testimony from Victims and Families
The court heard how Bennett had given one boy a book as a Christmas gift and offered to babysit him at the family home. The mother recalled hearing Bennett tell her son "I love you," highlighting the manipulative nature of his relationships with the children.
A police interview with one young victim was played to the jury, in which the boy explained he hadn't told anyone about the abuse at the time because he was worried about "saying the wrong thing." This poignant testimony underscored the vulnerability of the children and the calculated nature of Bennett's offences.
Families Demand Answers and Accountability
In a statement issued through law firm Leigh Day, families of children who attended the nursery expressed their devastation: "We are devastated by the horrific abuse children have suffered at the hands of someone whom we all trusted to care for them. Nothing can begin to explain the shock, anger and heartbreak we feel."
The statement continued with urgent questions about safeguarding failures: "We want to understand how someone like Nathan Bennett was able to work with young children, what checks were made, and how the safeguarding systems in place at Partou King Street nursery failed so catastrophically."
When given the opportunity to address the parents in court, Bennett offered only a brief statement: "I never wanted to hurt anybody." The nursery is part of the Partou group, originally founded in the Netherlands, raising further questions about oversight and child protection standards in early years settings.
