Leading radiographers have sounded the alarm over the potentially dangerous nature of commercial baby scan services proliferating across UK high streets. The Society of Radiographers has issued stark warnings about the unregulated industry that sees expectant parents paying for private ultrasound sessions.
The Hidden Dangers of Unregulated Scans
Medical experts express grave concerns that untrained operators in private clinics may miss serious abnormalities or provide incorrect diagnoses, potentially putting both mother and baby at risk. Unlike NHS procedures, these commercial services operate without mandatory regulatory oversight.
Charlotte Beardmore, Executive Director of Professional Policy at the Society of Radiographers, emphasised the seriousness of the situation: "We're seeing an increasing number of these private providers, and parents simply don't realise they might not be receiving care from properly qualified professionals."
What Parents Aren't Being Told

Several disturbing cases have emerged, including one where a private scan failed to detect serious abnormalities later identified by NHS services. Another parent was incorrectly told their baby had a potentially fatal condition, causing unnecessary distress until NHS scans provided accurate results.
Ms Beardmore highlighted the emotional toll: "Imagine being told everything is fine when it's not, or being told there's a problem when there isn't. The psychological impact on expectant parents can be devastating."
Call for Stricter Regulation
The healthcare professionals are urging for:
- Mandatory registration of all ultrasound practitioners
- Clear qualification requirements for operators
- Standardised training protocols
- Compulsory reporting mechanisms for abnormal findings
- Transparent information for consumers about operator qualifications
As Ms Beardmore concluded: "Parents deserve to know exactly who is performing these scans and what their qualifications are. Currently, there's no way for them to distinguish between properly trained professionals and those who may have only completed a short course."
The warning comes as the private baby scan market continues to expand, with many parents drawn to the opportunity for additional bonding experiences and keepsake images without understanding the potential risks involved.
