Widow Demands Answers After Husband's Body Returns from Cyprus Without Heart
A tragic family holiday in Cyprus has left a widow from Oldham in anguish, not only over the sudden death of her husband but also because his body was flown back to the UK without his heart, leaving the family without answers about the cause of his passing.
Sudden Collapse and Rapid Deterioration
Michael Graley, a 76-year-old man, complained of leg cramp while on vacation with his family last summer. His condition deteriorated rapidly, and he was found collapsed in the early hours of August 16. Rushed to a hospital in Cyprus, he was declared dead shortly after arrival. His widow, Yvonne Graley, expressed her profound grief, stating, "I don't know why he's not here. I haven't got a clue why he's not here." She poignantly added, "He was a man with a really big heart and now he hasn't got one."
Post-Mortem Confusion and Missing Organ
The family initially told Cypriot authorities they did not want a post-mortem examination conducted locally, leading to Michael's body being repatriated to the UK. However, they later received a shocking call from Rochdale Coroners' Court informing them that his heart was missing. This absence has made it impossible to determine the exact cause of death, compounding the family's distress. Local reports in Cyprus indicated that a post-mortem was performed, and the heart had been sent for further analysis, but details remain unclear.
Yvonne emphasized the urgency of the situation, saying, "We need some answers and we need to know what was wrong with the heart. It's killing us. I've got to get some answers from somewhere. We've had to have a funeral without it."
Inquest Opened and Medical History Revealed
An inquest into Michael's death was recently opened by assistant coroner Matthew Cox. During the proceedings, police coroners officer Megan Seddon noted that Michael's GP had cleared him for travel, but he was receiving treatment for a heart condition. She stated, "He became unwell on holiday. His health deteriorated and he died on August 16." The court did not delve into specifics about his medical condition or medications.
After the hearing, Yvonne revealed to the Manchester Evening News that doctors had previously told her husband he had an elevated heart rate. The inquest has been adjourned until August 16, leaving the family in a prolonged state of uncertainty as they await further developments.
