An urgent search is underway for a woman who entered the water alone at a popular Dorset beach, with police and coastguard teams scouring the area. The alarm was raised shortly after 11pm on August 8, 2026, when a member of the public expressed concern for the woman's welfare after she was seen entering the sea from Weymouth Esplanade and not returning.
Search operation launched
The National Police Air Service helicopter, HM Coastguard, and RNLI lifeboats were scrambled to the three-mile-long beach, which attracts thousands of visitors daily in good weather. Dorset Police described the woman as of average build with long hair, and she is believed to have been alone on the beach at the time.
She was last seen wearing a long flowing dress with a lighter colour at the top. Police have not found any belongings following a search of the beach area, heightening concerns for her safety.
Police appeal for information
Inspector Mark Latter of Dorset Police said: “We are growing increasingly concerned for the woman’s welfare and are carrying out enquiries to locate her. The woman was on her own at the time of the incident and no belongings have been found following a search of the beach area.”
He added: “I am appealing to anyone who may have witnessed a woman matching the description in the Weymouth Esplanade area at the time of the incident to contact us. I am also directly appealing to the woman to get in touch with us if she has left the water and is safe and well.”
Ongoing efforts
The search operation involves multiple agencies, including the police helicopter, coastguard rescue teams, and RNLI lifeboats, covering the waters off Weymouth. The beach, known for its sandy shoreline and promenade, is a popular spot for both locals and tourists.
