A 52-year-old man died after being stabbed inside a taxi in Ramsgate, Kent, early on Sunday morning, and a 21-year-old suspect has been arrested. The attack occurred at approximately 4:50am, with two men found suffering from stab wounds in separate locations: one on Harbour Street and one on Harbour Parade. The taxi, which had reportedly attempted to speed away from the scene, became stuck on a concrete bollard in the town centre. One of the victims is understood to have been the taxi driver.
Victims and Arrest
Both injured men were taken to a local hospital. The 52-year-old man, found on Harbour Street, was pronounced dead upon arrival. The second victim, a 48-year-old man, has since been discharged from hospital. Kent Police have arrested a 21-year-old suspect in connection with the incident.
The fatal stabbing has sent shockwaves through the seaside town, prompting a strong response from local officials. Ramsgate's mayor, Councillor Raushan Ara, expressed her dismay, stating: “I am shocked by the horrific incident that took place in our town last night on Harbour Street. It is the worst I have ever seen.”
Community Reaction and Calls for Action
Councillor Ara called on the town's Member of Parliament, Polly Billington, to raise the matter in Westminster and advocate for increased policing. She highlighted rising antisocial behaviour and drug-related issues in the community, which she said must be addressed to make Ramsgate safer for residents and visitors alike. “While local businesses are working hard to survive, incidents like this make our town feel unsafe for residents and for visitors who want to enjoy their time here,” she added.
The incident has raised concerns about public safety in the town, with local leaders urging for stronger measures to combat crime. The investigation is ongoing, and police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
