Leyton attack: Man critical after street assault

Police have launched an investigation after a man in his 20s was found unconscious in the street in Leyton, east London, following an apparent attack. The victim is now in hospital with life-threatening injuries, and a 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Officers on patrol discovered the man on High Road, Leyton, at approximately 8.13am on Saturday, August 22. The London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance were called to the scene, with an air ambulance reportedly landing at the nearby Leyton County Cricket Ground shortly after the discovery.

Arrest and police statement

The 26-year-old man was taken into custody at the scene on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm (GBH). He remains in police custody as enquiries continue.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “At 8.13am on Saturday, August 22, officers on patrol in High Road, Leyton, found a man aged in his 20s unconscious in the street.

“The man was treated at the scene by the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance before being taken to hospital, where his condition was assessed as life-threatening.

“A 26-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and remains in police custody while enquiries continue.”

Witness appeal

Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that could assist the investigation to come forward. Witnesses are asked to contact police by calling 101 and quoting reference CAD1742/22Aug.

The London Ambulance Service has been contacted for comment. A police cordon remained in place on the High Road for several hours following the incident.
