Ex jailed for 14 years after paralysing woman over rejected New Year's kiss
Man jailed for 14 years after paralysing ex-partner

A woman has been left permanently paralysed after a vicious attack by her former partner, who pushed her over a bannister and broke her spine when she refused to give him a New Year's kiss.

A Night of Celebration Turns to Tragedy

Barry Shankly, 45, attacked Janine Kazmi, 38, at his home in Dalmornock, Scotland, on December 31, 2020. The assault occurred just two months after Janine had ended their relationship due to his abusive behaviour. She had reluctantly agreed to spend New Year's Eve with him as a friend, believing it was easier than dealing with his anger.

As they prepared to leave his house, Shankly attempted to kiss her. When Janine rebuffed him, he became 'enraged' and shoved her over the bannister. She awoke in hospital with two fractured vertebrae in her spine and no memory of the fall, with Shankly falsely claiming she had accidentally tumbled.

A History of Control and Violence

Janine soon regained her memory and reported the attack to police, also detailing months of 'controlling and violent behaviour' she had endured during their relationship. The couple had met online in October 2016 and she moved to his Glasgow flat in September 2019.

Janine described how Shankly's abuse escalated after the move. 'He checked my phone and locked me in the flat. I wasn't allowed friends – he isolated me from everyone,' she recalled. During a trip to Lisbon in January 2020, he stamped on her phone and pushed her over, causing her to hit her head.

Life-Altering Injuries and a Fight for Justice

Janine was admitted to Glasgow Royal Infirmary and underwent spinal surgery on January 6, 2021. Doctors informed her she had fractured her spine between the 23rd and 25th vertebrae and would be left paraplegic. 'I was devastated. My life changed in an instant,' she said. The injury also means she is unable to have children.

Following rehabilitation in London, she eventually moved to Southend, Essex. Shankly was arrested and, after pleading not guilty, was tried at the High Court in Glasgow in July 2024. Janine gave evidence via video link. Shankly was found guilty and sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Challenges and a Message of Hope

Janine faced further hardship, spending two years in inaccessible temporary housing before securing a council property in Southend. She claims it took another two years for necessary adaptations to be made. 'It was so degrading – he’s in prison but at least he had access to a toilet,' she stated.

Now, Janine is determined to help other survivors of domestic abuse by speaking out. 'I’m not ashamed – it’s important to spread awareness,' she said. She encourages others to seek help, emphasising that 'there is life after a spinal injury', despite the immense challenges.
