Teen's Agonising Symptoms Initially Dismissed Before Leukaemia Diagnosis
A 16-year-old boy's severe back pain and dramatic weight loss were allegedly dismissed by doctors as a simple viral infection before he was diagnosed with a serious form of leukaemia, leaving his mother devastated.
Persistent Pain and Weight Loss Ignored
Kit Chester-Canavan from Bushey, Hertfordshire, first experienced intermittent back pain in April 2025. The pain became "really severe" after a bicycle accident in October that same year, prompting a visit to his doctor.
Initially, medical professionals diagnosed Kit with a straightforward musculoskeletal issue. However, when the pain persisted for a full month and his mother Amanda Chester noticed her son had lost approximately 15 pounds with a complete loss of appetite, they returned to the surgery.
"They tried to dismiss Kit with a virus," the family claims, but Amanda, 51, insisted on a blood test due to the concerning combination of symptoms.
Critical Blood Test Reveals Truth
The blood test results showed critically high levels of inflammation in Kit's body. On November 28, 2025, the previously active and healthy Arsenal fan received the devastating diagnosis: acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (B Type).
"I was very shocked when I got the diagnosis," Kit recalled. "We were in Watford General and they went to speak to my mum in a separate room. When I went to see her she was crying and when she told me I had leukaemia I almost laughed because I was so shocked."
Amanda described the emotional impact: "If I hadn't shouted for the blood test would we be in a different position? They should've been able to see something bigger was going on, that there were red flags."
Two-Year Treatment Journey Begins
Kit has now begun an intensive treatment regimen at University College Hospital London (UCLH) that includes:
- Chemotherapy treatments
- Immunotherapy sessions
- Bone marrow tests to monitor cancer progression
Doctors estimate his treatment will last approximately two years. Throughout this period, Kit will have a PICC line in his arm, preventing him from participating in many of his favourite activities.
Family's Emotional Struggle and Future Hopes
The diagnosis has taken a significant emotional toll on the entire family. Amanda shared: "As a mum it's really upsetting because you do all this stuff and it makes no difference. His younger brother, Bodie, 14, has found it really hard. You're left wondering: 'what did I do wrong?'"
Despite the challenges, Kit maintains remarkable positivity. "This is just a fork in the road for me," he said. "It's a David vs Goliath battle, but I'll come out of it stronger."
Fundraising for Future Dreams
Amanda established a fundraising page to honour Kit's wishes to support the Teenage Cancer Trust while giving him something positive to anticipate. The charity has already provided significant support, arranging visits from Arsenal players including Eberechi Eze, David Raya, Tommy Setford and Jurrien Timber.
Kit dreams of an adventurous trip through Asia once he recovers, with specific plans including:
- Exploring Vietnam, Thailand and Bali
- Spear fishing and cooking his catch over an open fire
- Completing a bungee jump in New Zealand he's dreamed of since age eight
"It's been tough, I've been in and out of hospital and in pain, but there are good and bad days," Kit acknowledged. "I'm just grateful for everyone, my friends, family and all the charities."
Amanda remains hopeful about her son's future: "Kit will have a great future, I'm extremely proud of him, his positivity is awe-inspiring. It's been a lot for both of us, but his strength will shine through."
