Stanley Johnson, father of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, has disclosed that he underwent treatment for cancer, resulting in the removal of half of his colon. The 85-year-old former Member of the European Parliament (MEP) shared a photograph on social media showing himself in a hospital bed following the procedure.
“I am enjoying a brief summer break at the Royal Marsden, destination of choice,” he stated. After undergoing surgery on Friday, he is now recuperating at the Chelsea hospital. He told the Daily Mail that his diagnosis came after a routine chest scan. “The doctor told me, there’s nothing wrong with your chest, but there’s something odd further down,” he explained.
Boris Johnson is believed to have taken the photo of his father smiling and waving from his hospital bed. Stanley added, “The moral of the story is, scan when you can. It was spotted early and dealt with quickly.”
Stanley Johnson served as the Conservative MEP for Wight and Hampshire East from 1979 to 1984. He has also worked for the World Bank and the European Commission. In 2017, he participated in the 17th series of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! and has authored books on environmental and population issues.
In 2020, a biography about Boris Johnson alleged that Stanley had broken his mother’s nose, requiring hospital treatment when Boris was a child. Stanley declined to comment at the time, stating he had not read the book. Number 10 also refrained from commenting.
In 2021, two women accused Stanley Johnson of inappropriate touching at Conservative Party conferences. Senior Tory MP Caroline Nokes claimed he had forcefully smacked her on the backside and made a vulgar comment at the 2003 conference. Political correspondent Ailbhe Rea said he had groped her at the 2019 conference. Stanley Johnson stated he had “no recollection” of either incident.
