Volvo ES90 Review: Forward-Looking Tech in a Traditional Saloon Package
Volvo ES90 Review: Tech Meets Tradition

Volvo has returned to the luxury saloon market with the fully electric ES90, offering an alternative to its popular SUV lineup. John Redfern explores how this new model measures up against competitors.

A Saloon Rebooted

Over the past decade, Volvo has focused heavily on SUVs, making the ES90 a refreshing outlier that recalls classic models like the 900 Series. However, the ES90 is thoroughly modern, targeting company car drivers who are now on their third or fourth electric vehicle. Jack Munford, head of fleet at Volvo Car UK, notes that the ES90 combines safety, technology, practicality, and drivability for a wide audience.

The ES90 faces stiff competition from German premium brands such as the BMW i5, Audi A6 E-Tron, and Mercedes-Benz EQE, as well as the Genesis Electrified G80.

Design and Platform

Built on the SPA2 platform shared with the EX90 SUV and Polestar 3, the ES90 has a slightly elevated ride height reminiscent of an SUV. It even includes an Off Road mode for unpaved roads. At five meters long, the ES90 boasts a sleek drag coefficient of 0.25 and a practical fastback-style hatch instead of a traditional boot.

Notably, UK models lack the LIDAR sensor hump above the windscreen, as Volvo ended its partnership with Luminar. The ES90 now relies solely on cameras for safety monitoring.

Battery and Charging

The Single Motor version features an 88kWh usable battery pack with an official range of 411 miles, though real-world driving suggests around 340 miles. The 800-volt architecture supports DC fast charging up to 350kW, enabling a 10-80% charge in 22 minutes—ideal for busy executives.

Driving Experience

The Single Motor variant produces 333hp, accelerating from 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds. Torque delivery is smooth, with a slight hesitation before full 354lb ft kicks in. The Twin Motor versions (449hp or 680hp in Performance guise) may be overkill for most buyers.

On pothole-ridden roads, the ES90 impresses with its calm cabin, even with standard suspension and 20-inch wheels. Air suspension on Ultra models further refines ride quality. Steering is light, emphasizing comfort over sportiness.

Interior and Technology

Inside, Scandi-minimalism meets luxury with high-quality materials. Buttons are scarce; most functions are controlled via a 14.5-inch touchscreen running Google software, with a 9.0-inch digital display behind the steering wheel and a head-up display. While the system is quick, some adjustments (e.g., wing mirrors) require navigating menus, which may frustrate some users.

The standard Bose 14-speaker system is good, but the optional Bowers & Wilkins 25-speaker, 1,610-watt setup is exceptional.

Space and Practicality

Front seats offer generous space and an SUV-like high seating position, aided by a panoramic sunroof. Rear legroom is ample, but the rear seats sit low, forcing knees into an unnatural position. Headroom is adequate.

The hatchback boot provides 424 liters, expanding to 1,424 liters with seats folded. A front frunk offers 27 liters for charging cables.

Trim Levels and Pricing

The ES90 is available in Plus or Ultra trim. Plus includes 20-inch wheels, four-zone climate control, heated seats, panoramic roof, and birch wood trim. Ultra adds 21-inch wheels, air suspension, massage seats, and the Bowers & Wilkins audio system.

Pricing starts at £67,560 for the ES90 Plus (Single Motor), matching the BMW i5. Ultra starts at £77,260, Twin Motor at £81,460, and Performance at £86,060. The Single Motor Plus offers the best value.

Verdict

Volvo deserves praise for building a comfortable, luxurious saloon that prioritizes relaxation over sportiness. As an alternative to German rivals, the ES90 is easy to recommend for long-distance driving. While the touchscreen reliance is a minor drawback, the ES90 proves that SUVs aren't the only option for luxury motoring. Volvo has successfully rebooted the saloon.
