In a highly unusual public experiment, the American millionaire and biohacker Bryan Johnson has live streamed himself undergoing a six-hour psychedelic trip on magic mushrooms. The 47-year-old, who is famous for his extreme attempts to combat ageing, consumed 5.43 grams of the fungi in a session broadcast to thousands of viewers via his social media channels.
The Livestreamed Psychedelic Journey
The event took place on Sunday, December 1, 2025. Johnson, seated on a sofa, was filmed as he progressed through the various stages of the experience. Viewers saw him discuss his sensations, at times struggle to speak, play with a slinky toy, and later lie down on a mattress wearing an eye mask. His business partner, Kate Tolo, was present throughout to ensure his safety.
The session also featured remote appearances from several high-profile figures in the tech world. Musician Grimes joined via video to play a DJ set towards the end of the trip. She was accompanied by three tech founders: Marc Benioff, Naval Ravikant, and David Friedberg.
The Science Behind the Stunt
This was far from a mere recreational endeavour. Central to Johnson's mission was the collection of biometric data. His team measured his vital statistics both before and after the trip to analyse the physical impact of the mushrooms and their potential role in slowing ageing.
The mushrooms contained 28mg of psilocybin, the compound that converts to psilocin in the body and produces psychedelic effects by interacting with serotonin receptors in the brain. Johnson's interest is partly fuelled by a 2025 scientific study from Baylor College of Medicine and Emory University, which found psilocybin extended cellular and animal lifespan, even when administered later in life.
Naval Ravikant, an investor in Johnson's supplement company Blueprint, praised the unconventional approach, stating, ‘Bryan is a one-man FDA... I hope he survives for a long time and then gives us the cheat codes.’
Part of a Radical Longevity Regime
This public livestream marks the second time Johnson has documented a psilocybin experience. An earlier, private experiment earlier in November 2025 led him to describe feeling like a child again, with all his senses heightened, calling the experience ‘exhilarating. Positive in every way.’
Johnson's mushroom trial is just one facet of an incredibly strict anti-ageing protocol. His daily routine, overseen by a medical team, involves intense exercise, a vegan diet, and swallowing over 100 supplements. His past attempts include a ‘total plasma exchange’ in 2024 and a failed 2023 experiment to swap blood with his teenage son.
While magic mushrooms are permitted for limited use in some US states, they remain illegal in California, where Johnson resides. The location of the livestream and the source of the mushrooms were not disclosed.
