A spokesperson for Bonnie Tyler has confirmed that the Welsh singer has been placed into an induced coma to aid her recovery after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery. The 74-year-old artist was rushed to a hospital near her home in Faro, Portugal, for the procedure earlier this week.

On Wednesday, it was revealed that Tyler had been admitted for emergency surgery, which was reported to have gone well. However, a further update on Thursday evening indicated that doctors had decided to place her in an induced coma to support her recovery process.

“Bonnie has been put into an induced coma by her doctors to aid her recovery,” the spokesperson stated. “We know that you all wish her well and ask for privacy at this difficult time please. We will issue a further statement when we are able to.”

The initial news of her surgery was shared via an Instagram post on Wednesday, which read: “We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery. The surgery went well and she is now recuperating. We know that all of her family, friends and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery.”

Bonnie Tyler, whose real name is Gaynor Hopkins, rose to international fame in the 1980s with her iconic single “Total Eclipse Of The Heart,” which topped the charts in both the UK and the US. Known for her distinctive husky voice, she has released numerous hits over the decades, including “Holding Out For A Hero,” “It’s A Heartache,” and “If You Were A Woman (And I Was A Man).”

The Grammy-nominated star was scheduled to tour Europe later this year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of her 1976 breakthrough hit “Lost In France,” which charted across Europe. Her upcoming tour includes performances in Malta and Germany later this month, as well as shows across the UK, Austria, Hungary, Turkey, and Romania.
