The Traitors UK star Sam has opened up about a 'gut-wrenching' scam that cost him £40,000. In an emotional revelation, he described the ordeal as 'sickening' and hopes his story will warn others.
How the Scam Unfolded
Sam explained that he usually avoids answering calls from unknown numbers. However, after receiving texts that appeared to be from his bank, warning of a cryptocurrency account breach, he decided to call back. The scammers replicated his account page without needing passwords, using fear tactics to convince him to move his funds.
'They took me through one by one and said they need all of this for our insurance case. There was the most sickening moment when Alex, my wife, came in and she googled the number that I had rang, it just said, red flag, UK phishing number, scam, do not call,' he shared.
By the time he realized, it was too late. 'My heart just fell through the floor. By that point, it was too late; they’d emptied everything, they hung up, I tried to ring back, couldn’t get through and panic just set in. This was £40,000, I’m talking lifesavings.'
Aftermath and Police Response
Sam immediately contacted the police, who warned him that 'it’s not a matter of if you get scammed, it’s when.' Despite logging a case, nothing has been recovered. He has spent months trying to emotionally recover and even asked followers for ideas to recoup some of the money.
'It really wrecks you. I was in a really bad way. It’s not just money and that much money is a life-changing amount of money to anyone and it’s just getting more and more common,' he added.

UK Finance reported over 4 million fraud cases last year, with £1.3bn stolen in 2025. Investment scams surged 40%, setting a new record. AI is increasingly used by criminals to manipulate victims.
