Former Made in Chelsea star Spencer Matthews has given a remarkably candid interview, admitting his past struggles with alcohol nearly destroyed his marriage to Irish media personality Vogue Williams.
The Turning Point: Fear of Losing Vogue
Speaking to Davina McCall on her Begin Again podcast, the 37-year-old reflected on the pivotal moment in 2017 when he realised his relationship was in serious jeopardy. Matthews confessed he was a 'very heavy drinker' at the time, a habit that began to erode the foundation of his romance with Williams, whom he married in 2018.
'I could just see the relationship slipping,' Matthews stated. 'I could see that she would lose interest in me and put me on some scrap heap somewhere if I didn't make an actual change to my own health. The fear of losing her was quite real.' He emphasised that this fear was a new sensation, as he had been 'quite selfish' in previous relationships.
From Addiction to Endurance Athlete
Matthews' decision to get sober was initially for Vogue, but quickly became a commitment to himself. He cited his appearance on Channel 4's The Jump in 2017 as a period of particularly damaging drinking. This lifestyle change, coupled with the birth of their first child, Theodore, in 2018, became a powerful catalyst for transformation.
He has since become an extreme endurance athlete, completing 30 marathons in 30 days in Jordan last year—a feat that broke a world record. His latest challenge, Project Se7en, involved completing a full Ironman triathlon on each continent in just 21 days.
A Public Partnership and Private Strength
The couple, who also share daughter Gigi, five, and son Otto, three, are famously open about their lives. Matthews lavished praise on his wife during the interview, calling her a 'very special person' who 'lights up rooms'. He credited her with helping to 'transform' him into a better man.
Beyond fitness, Matthews has channeled his experience into business, founding the non-alcoholic spirits brand CleanCo. He now drinks only occasionally, a stark contrast to his past. The pair have also repeatedly and firmly denied rumours of marital strife, labelling such reports earlier this year as 'baseless and cruel'.
For anyone concerned about their drinking, the NHS recommends Drinkline, the national alcohol helpline, on 0300 123 1110. Support is also available through Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).
