A viral TikTok video has exposed a hidden compartment in airplane toilets that contains emergency supplies such as sanitary towels, extra toilet roll, and air fresheners. Microinfluencer Tatti Sorokina posted the clip after a flight attendant directed her to the secret cupboard when her period started mid-flight.
What's inside the secret cupboard?
Former cabin crew member Saskia Sekhri told Metro that behind the bathroom mirror, accessible by pushing a button underneath, passengers can find extra loo roll, hand wash, air fresheners, and sanitary products. In first class, hand lotion and hand towels may also be stored there. The compartment is replenished during cabin crew checks.
Why passengers might need it
Saskia explained that frequent flyers often experience disrupted periods due to long-haul flights, jet lag, and stress. Pharmacist Thorrun Govind confirmed that these factors can alter hormone levels, causing periods to come early or late. This can leave unprepared passengers in need of sanitary products mid-flight.
How to access the compartment
To open the mirror, push up underneath it to release a button. Saskia advised being gentle, as older aircraft may have temperamental mechanisms. She also warned against leaving anything in the cupboard, as crew must check it for security before boarding.
Reactions and etiquette
The TikTok post garnered over 26,000 likes, though some commenters noted the cupboard is not on every plane. Saskia said it is available on most commercial flights. She recommended asking cabin crew first, but if queues are long, helping yourself is acceptable to avoid leakage.
