Molly-Mae Hague has disclosed the unexpected origin of her newborn son's name, Midas Thomas Fury, clarifying it was inspired by the 2011 sci-fi film Real Steel rather than Greek mythology. The 27-year-old former Love Island star returned to YouTube with a 29-minute vlog following the birth of her second child with boxer Tommy Fury, addressing fan speculation about the name's meaning.
Film Inspiration Over Greek Myth
In the video, Hague explained that some viewers had assumed she named her son after King Midas from Greek mythology, the ruler granted the ability to turn everything he touched into gold—a tale often interpreted as a cautionary fable about greed. 'I saw a few comments being like: “King Midas was a fool in Greek mythology. This is just so silly if she’s called her son this,”' she recounted. However, Hague revealed the true source: 'I actually found the name from watching a film called Real Steel.'
She described the film as 'such a great film, it’s got Hugh Jackman in it. And it’s a film about robots boxing.' Hague laughed at herself before elaborating: 'One of the robots in the film that was boxing was called Midas, and I heard the name and I thought… This was years ago… I was like: “Wow, that’s a really cool, strong name. Midas? I’ve never heard of that before.”' She then shared the name with Tommy Fury, who 'absolutely fell in love with it,' solidifying their choice.
Positive Connotations of the Name
Despite the film origin, Hague acknowledged the Greek myth's positive aspect. 'I believe the story is that everything he [King Midas] touches turns to gold and I do absolutely just love that saying,' she said. She noted that, similar to her daughter Bambi—who is not named solely after the Disney character—Midas is not exclusively tied to the mythological figure.
Recording on June 12, the day before Fury's fight against Eddie Hall, Hague discussed designing her partner's fight kit with a special detail: 'When Tommy wears his kit tomorrow, inside the kit […] we’ve put a little patch inside that says: “Everything he touches turns to gold.”' On June 13, Fury revealed the name Midas on his waistband in gold lettering during his walkout at Manchester's AO Arena, where he defeated Hall on points. Hague watched ringside as her partner secured the victory.
