Kate Cassidy, the former girlfriend of late One Direction star Liam Payne, has revealed she was dumped because she kept comparing her new boyfriend to Payne. In a video shared with her nearly 2 million Instagram followers, Cassidy, 27, explained the emotional struggle of dating after losing someone she believed she would spend her life with.
Comparing Every New Partner to Liam
Cassidy, who dated Payne for over two years before his tragic death in Buenos Aires in October 2024, said: 'I got dumped, you guys. Dating after losing somebody that you genuinely thought you were going to spend the rest of your life with is really tough because I physically look for Liam in every single guy that I meet.' She admitted to asking her new partner questions like, 'Liam would do this, so why aren’t you doing this?' According to Cassidy, her ex-boyfriend texted her saying they should go their separate ways because the comparisons were too much. She said she understands but feels sad because she doesn't like losing people, especially at the beginning of a situationship when it's exciting.
Final Goodbye with Payne
Payne died on October 16, 2024, at age 31, after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. Since his death, Cassidy has shared her grieving process with fans, regularly posting pictures of him on Instagram. In an interview on Jay Shetty's On Purpose podcast, she recalled the final words she exchanged with Payne before leaving Argentina for Florida, just days before his death. She said: 'I remember sitting there with him, and I was going on and on and on about how much I love him, and he laughed and interrupted me, and was like, 'Kate, you’re gonna miss your flight, your car is in the driveway.' Payne told her, 'You’re acting like this is the last time you are ever gonna see me again.' Cassidy reflected: 'I just laughed back. But to look back in time and know that that was the last time I was ever going to see him again is just so chilling.' She added that she is blessed the goodbye was heartfelt and wouldn't change it.
Payne's Love for One Direction
Cassidy also spoke about how much Payne loved One Direction. She said: 'It was such a huge part of his life and career. Who didn’t love them? I think everybody had hopes for a reunion at some point. Liam would have been more than happy in the future to do that. He was so proud of the boys. He loved them so much he looked at them as brothers.'
