Jordan Henderson will miss the remainder of the World Cup after suffering a freak wrist injury during England's post-match celebrations following their 3-2 victory over Mexico at the Azteca. The Brentford midfielder, an unused substitute, injured himself while hopping over advertising hoardings, slipping and landing awkwardly on his arm.
Injury details and immediate response
Henderson received on-field treatment and was stretchered off after oxygen was administered. He was taken to a hospital in Mexico City with a member of England's medical staff, while the rest of the squad returned to their base in Kansas City. The injury requires surgery, ruling him out for the tournament.
Impact on England's squad
England manager Thomas Tuchel described the incident as a serious blow. 'It's quite a serious injury. He's in hospital. It doesn't fit with the rest of the evening that Jordan is now not with us,' Tuchel said in his post-match press conference. The squad also faces other absences: Reece James has missed three games with a hamstring injury, and Jarell Quansah is suspended after a red card against Mexico.
England advanced to the quarter-finals after a thrilling win, with Jude Bellingham scoring twice and Harry Kane adding a penalty. They will face Norway in Miami on Saturday. Despite Henderson's limited expected role, Tuchel expressed frustration over the diminished options ahead of the crucial match.
