Senegal will be without goalkeeper Edouard Mendy for their final World Cup group stage match against Iraq on June 26, 2026, as confirmed by the Senegalese Football Federation. The 34-year-old former Chelsea shot-stopper sustained a left knee injury during Senegal's 3-2 defeat to Norway on Monday, forcing him to be replaced by Mory Diaw in the 63rd minute.
Injury Details and Medical Assessment
Following the match, medical examinations revealed the extent of the injury. The federation stated: 'The Senegalese Football Federation inform the public that goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has sustained an injury to his left knee during the match between Senegal and Norway on Monday. Following the initial medical examinations undertaken by the national team’s medical staff, the player is declared to be unavailable for Senegal’s next match.'
The federation added that 'the appropriate care as well as complementary medical examinations are currently being undertaken in order to evaluate with precision the nature of the injury and determine whether he will be able to participate further in the competition.'
Senegal's World Cup Situation
Senegal have lost both of their group matches so far, beaten by France and Norway, leaving their hopes of qualifying for the last 32 very slim. However, a huge win against Iraq this evening could still keep them in contention to advance as one of the eight best third-placed teams. Without Mendy, the team will rely on backup goalkeeper Mory Diaw, who replaced him against Norway.
The federation concluded: 'The Senegalese Football Federation address to Edouard Mendy our wishes for his swift recovery and hope to see him soon on the pitch.'
