Channel 4 Accused of Casting Man with History of Violence on First Dates
Channel 4 Cast Man with Violence History on First Dates

Channel 4 has come under renewed scrutiny after it was revealed that a former contestant on the dating show First Dates had a documented history of violence against women. This development follows earlier allegations involving the network's other reality program, Married At First Sight UK, where two brides claimed they were raped during filming.

First Dates Contestant's Criminal History

According to reports, a 41-year-old man who appeared on First Dates had previously admitted in court to assaulting an ex-girlfriend and striking a second partner. In 2020, he was sentenced to a one-year community order, a two-year restraining order, and ordered to pay £225. The mother of one victim expressed shock at seeing him on television, stating: 'I cannot tell you how damaging this man has been to her life physically, but also the impact to her long-term mental health has been catastrophic. She was so brave to take him on, and she did so hoping he would be punished and other women would not have to suffer as she has done.'

Another ex-partner described 'spiralling' after seeing him on the show, noting that the trauma 'impacts my daily life.' She added: 'Channel 4 should be held accountable for presenting, for entertainment, a man with a known history of violence against women as a safe and trustworthy partner.'

Channel 4's Response

A Channel 4 spokesperson defended their vetting process, stating: 'All First Dates contributors are subject to the highest level of checks we are legally able to undertake, which include a DBS and detailed online checks. All checks for this individual, including the DBS, were clear.' However, DBS checks do not disclose spent cautions or convictions, which can be legally ignored after a certain period. According to charity Unlock, adult cautions are removed from standard and enhanced checks after six years unless they involve specified offences such as sexual offences or actual bodily harm.

Broader Context of Allegations

These latest claims come amid a wider controversy surrounding Channel 4's reality shows. Earlier, two Married At First Sight UK brides alleged they were raped during filming, and a third reported a non-consensual sex act. Channel 4 CEO Priya Dogra expressed deep sorrow and confirmed a review is underway. The network has not indicated any plans to halt production on First Dates, which continues to air its current season.

The future of Married At First Sight UK remains uncertain, with a spokesperson stating: 'No decision has been made on the broadcast of MAFS UK. We have just announced an external review into contributor welfare on MAFS UK and we need to see what that finds before deciding what happens next.'
