Underwater glitch resurfaces in Black Flag Resynced

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced has launched with record-breaking success, selling over two million copies and setting series records on Steam. However, the game has also revived a notorious glitch from the original 2013 title, allowing players to sail the Jackdaw ship underwater in a biblical sea-splitting fashion.

As highlighted by YouTuber G3-Assassin, the bug lets players plunge into the ocean without affecting crew behavior or character physics. The ship bobs beneath the waves as if commanded by a supernatural pirate. Reddit users have reported additional variations, including cut scenes where characters are partially submerged with altered hair physics and bubbles emerging from their mouths.

Throwback to original Black Flag bug

A similar glitch existed in the original Black Flag, with clips showing Edward Kenway's ship emerging from an open gulf in the sea as bodies fly into the sky. It remains unclear whether Ubisoft intentionally left the bug in the remake, but it serves as a nostalgic nod to the series' history of bizarre errors, such as the infamous no-face glitch in Assassin's Creed Unity (2014).

Black Flag Resynced introduces underwater exploration for the first time, a feature praised by players. However, the team behind these sections at Ubisoft Barcelona is facing layoffs. Gameplay animator Manel Cota responded on X: 'Thanks! Ubisoft Barcelona did all the underwater levels. And that same team is being fired right now because Ubisoft thinks that's what we deserve :).' Staff are striking against the proposed cuts, which could affect 51 employees. Ubisoft has stated that 'no final decision' has been made.

Next mainline Assassin's Creed game

Ubisoft has not officially announced the next mainline title, but it is widely expected to be Assassin's Creed Hexe, set in 16th-century Germany during the witch trials. Announced in September 2022 with a teaser, the project has seen creative changes, with Jean Guesdon replacing Clint Hocking as creative director earlier this year. A recent leak suggests magical elements, including a rumored playable cat, have been removed. The game is anticipated for release next year.
