Bills GM mourns Ed Oliver's son's death as 'unthinkable tragedy'

Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane has expressed the organization's condolences to defensive tackle Ed Oliver after the death of Oliver's two-year-old son, Ed Jr. The toddler was pronounced dead after being found unresponsive in a residential pool outside Houston, Oliver's hometown, on 28 June.

GM Calls Loss 'Unthinkable Tragedy'

“It’s an unthinkable tragedy for any parent. We will continue to support Ed and his family as we grieve this tragic loss,” Beane said before the Bills’ preseason game in Cleveland on Saturday.

Oliver, 28, has asked for privacy and prayers while mourning his son. The Harris County Sheriff’s Department posted a note on its Facebook account that evening regarding the drowning of a toddler in a neighborhood community north of Houston, without providing details including names or ages.

Investigation Ongoing

“This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the toddler’s family during this incredibly difficult time. The investigation is ongoing,” the post read.

Oliver is entering his eighth season in Buffalo after being selected by the Bills in the first round of the 2019 draft out of Houston. He reported for training camp on time last month and appeared with the starters in the Bills’ preseason-opening 29-14 win over Carolina last weekend. He has not practiced this week because of an undisclosed injury.

Team Support Continues

Beane's statement underscores the team's commitment to supporting Oliver during this period. The Bills have not provided further details about the incident or any additional steps the organization will take to assist Oliver and his family.

The investigation by the Harris County Sheriff’s Department remains ongoing, and no further public statements have been made by Oliver or his representatives.
