Anne Hathaway has stunned fans by revealing that she was legally blind in her left eye for a full decade, during which she starred in some of the most acclaimed films of her career. The 43-year-old Oscar winner shared the news in a recent interview, explaining that an early-onset cataract severely impaired her vision from ages 30 to 40.
A Decade of Visual Impairment
Speaking to the New York Times Popcast, Hathaway said she was 'half blind for 10 years' and only realized how bad her vision had become after undergoing surgery. 'I had an early onset cataract and it impacted my vision so much that I was basically legally blind in my left eye,' she explained. 'I didn't realize how bad it had gotten until I could finally see the full spectrum. It was actually taxing my nervous system.'
Career Highlights During That Period
During those years, Hathaway starred in Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, which is now considered one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made. She also appeared in The Intern alongside Robert De Niro, Ocean's Eight, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Modern Love, and The Witches. Her performance in Les Misérables won her an Academy Award before this period.
Fan Reactions
The revelation has left fans shocked. One user on X wrote: 'She was blind in her eye for 10 years and still acted circles, rectangles, and pentagons around most of the other actresses in her bracket.' Another added: 'Oh my god?? The amount of movies she did during those 10 years, and she never mentioned it. This woman is a machine!'
Newfound Appreciation for Sight
Hathaway now has a deeper gratitude for her vision. 'Every day I wake up and get to see the way I do, it's a miracle,' she said. 'Two generations back, that wouldn't have been an option for someone like me.' Cataracts, which cause cloudy vision and sight loss, typically affect people over 60, but Hathaway developed one early.
Recent Spotlight
The actress has been in the news recently for the Devil Wears Prada sequel and her role as Penelope in Nolan's upcoming film The Odyssey. She also sparked discussion after sharing a red carpet hack involving hidden plaits for a natural facelift, leading to speculation about cosmetic surgery. Hathaway addressed the rumors, saying: 'My preference would be to never comment on anything and just live in the mystery, but the speculation has gotten so loud that you do feel the need to get your truth out there.'
