Philippines Landfill Collapse: One Dead, 38 Missing in Garbage Avalanche
One dead, 38 missing in Philippines landfill collapse

A catastrophic collapse at a landfill site in the Philippines has left one person dead and 38 others missing, feared trapped under an avalanche of garbage and debris.

Disaster Strikes Without Warning

The incident occurred shortly after 4pm local time (8am UK time) on Thursday 8th January 2026 in the village of Binaliw, Cebu City. A massive mound of waste from a facility operated by Prime Waste Solutions Cebu gave way, sending a wall of rubbish cascading into the community.

Local councillor Joel Garganera, who chairs the city council's environment committee, confirmed the timeline. An employee at the site, Joey Boy Gealon, described hearing sudden screams and loud crashing sounds, stating the collapse happened without any warning.

Dangerous Hampered Rescue Efforts

Emergency response was swift, with the Cebu City government deploying rescue teams, ambulances, and heavy equipment to the scene. However, the operation has been severely hampered by perilous conditions.

Twelve people were injured in the disaster, and one woman tragically died while being transported to hospital. Councillor Garganera highlighted the extreme risks facing rescuers, noting the instability of the soft garbage and massive steel trusses, which present a constant risk of further movement.

A critical concern is the potential for toxic air in the debris, which could endanger the lives of anyone trapped for an extended period and the rescue teams themselves.

Long-Standing Safety Fears Revealed

In a disturbing revelation, employee Joey Boy Gealon alleged that staff at the waste management facility had been worried about the excessive height of the garbage pile for several years prior to the catastrophe.

One of the structures hit by the deluge of waste was a warehouse where workers sorted recyclable materials, according to police brigadier general Redrico Maranan. It remains unclear if any nearby houses were also affected by the slide.

In a statement, Prime Waste Solutions Cebu said, "The safety and wellbeing of our employees, contractors, and neighbouring communities remain our top priority." Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival assured the public that all response teams are fully engaged in search and retrieval efforts for the missing, with strict adherence to safety protocols.
