A devastating tornado tore through central Illinois on Monday, leaving at least three people dead and dozens of homes destroyed, authorities reported.
Path of Destruction
The tornado touched down near the town of Washington around 5 p.m. local time, cutting a swath of destruction through several communities before dissipating. Emergency crews are conducting door-to-door searches for victims.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker declared a state of emergency for the affected counties, mobilizing National Guard units to assist with rescue and recovery efforts.
Casualties and Damage
The confirmed death toll stands at three, with at least 20 people injured and transported to local hospitals. Dozens of homes have been reduced to rubble, and power lines are down across the region.
"This is a heartbreaking day for Illinois," said Governor Pritzker. "We are doing everything we can to support the communities impacted."
Response and Recovery
The American Red Cross has opened shelters for displaced residents. Utility crews are working to restore power to more than 10,000 customers left without electricity.
Meteorologists warn that more severe weather could hit the area overnight, complicating rescue operations.
