Severe Storms Forecast for NSW, Victoria and Queensland

Severe Storm System Sweeps Across Eastern Australia

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued severe weather warnings for large portions of New South Wales, with destructive winds and dangerous thunderstorms expected to impact coastal regions. The weather system is also bringing significant rainfall to parts of Queensland and Victoria, creating a widespread weather event across eastern Australia.

Immediate Threats and Affected Regions

According to BoM meteorologist Christie Johnson, destructive wind gusts exceeding 125km/h pose the most significant risk, particularly across the Hunter region, mid-north coast and northern tablelands. These conditions could cause substantial damage to property and vehicles, bring down trees and power lines, and lead to extended power outages and transport delays.

The Sydney metropolitan area faces its greatest severe storm risk from late morning through early afternoon. Meanwhile, elevated fire danger warnings have been issued for central and eastern NSW ahead of the cold front's arrival, with temperatures expected to reach 32°C in Sydney, 31°C in Newcastle and 29°C in Wollongong.

Wider Weather Impacts Across States

Queensland can expect showers and thunderstorms moving from the north-west toward the south-east coast throughout the day. In Victoria, rainfall totals between 15 to 30mm are forecast across large areas from Melbourne's east to Gippsland and the NSW border, potentially causing river rises and isolated minor flooding.

Saturday's capital city forecasts include: Sydney at 32°C with developing storms, Melbourne at 13°C with increasing rain, and Brisbane at 31°C with late showers. Residents across affected regions are advised to monitor official warnings and prepare for potentially hazardous conditions.
