London Weather Warning for 'Big Change' as Temperatures Set to Plummet 6C in 24 Hours
Forecasters have issued a stark warning for London residents, predicting a dramatic shift in weather conditions over the coming week. Following a period of unseasonable warmth and sunshine, the capital is bracing for colder, wetter weather that will see temperatures drop significantly.
Sudden Temperature Decline Expected
According to the latest Met Office forecast, London temperatures are expected to fall from a pleasant 16C on Monday and Tuesday (March 23 and 24) to just 10C on Wednesday (March 25). This represents a substantial 6C drop within a 24-hour period. However, the actual feel of the temperature will be even more pronounced due to accompanying weather factors.
Met Office meteorologist Honor Criswick explained to the Press Association that the UK weather forecast is "turning colder from Wednesday" with a mix of sunshine and showers expected. "Some showers will be heavy with some hail and thunder, and may bring some snow to modest hills, with small accumulations likely," she continued. "Ice could also develop in places on both Tuesday and Wednesday night."
Wind Chill Factor to Exacerbate Cold Conditions
The temperature drop will be particularly noticeable due to brisk northerly winds that are expected to make conditions feel significantly colder. While temperatures will range from 6C to 10C, the wind chill factor will make it feel closer to low single figures for many areas throughout Wednesday.
"Temperatures will be widely below average for the time of year, which is around 11C for the UK," Criswick noted. "It will be a big change from last week when we had our warmest day of the year so far with 22.9C recorded last Wednesday in Gogerddan, Dyfed."
Weather Pattern Shift Explained
Greg Dewhurst, another meteorologist from the Met Office, described the approaching weather system as "all change from the north" with a "cold front" sinking southwards across the country. This meteorological shift follows a week that saw much of the UK enjoying spring-like conditions, including the warmest day of the year so far on Wednesday when London recorded a high of 20.1C in Northolt.
The weather change will bring not only colder temperatures but also increased wind activity. Gusts of 30 to 40mph are possible in north-west Scotland on Monday, with similar conditions expected to affect London and surrounding areas as the cold front progresses southward.
Preparation Advised for Changing Conditions
Londoners are advised to prepare for the sudden weather shift by having appropriate clothing available and being aware of potential hazards. The combination of colder temperatures, wind chill, and potential precipitation creates conditions that could affect outdoor activities and travel plans.
The Met Office continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as the weather system develops. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about local forecasts and any additional warnings that may be issued as the cold front approaches the capital region.
