London Braces for Weekend Snow as Met Office Issues Yellow Ice Warning
Weather expert Jim Dales of British Weather Services has confirmed that London is likely to experience snowy conditions this weekend, with the best chance of snowfall occurring on Sunday morning, February 15. The prediction comes as the Met Office has issued a Yellow Weather Warning for ice covering much of the capital, effective from 5pm on Friday, February 13, until 10am on Saturday, February 14.
Expert Predictions and Meteorological Corroboration
Jim Dales, who accurately forecast mid-February snow at the end of January, attributes the impending weather to a polar vortex—a large region of cold, rotating air. While temperatures are expected to plummet to around 3°C, Dales notes this is slightly above where you’d want to be to see snow. He emphasized that any snow that falls is likely to be peripheral and unlikely to settle, and if it does, it will probably disappear quickly.
The Met Office corroborates Dales' assessment, indicating that snow is possible on both Saturday, February 14, and Sunday. Residents are advised to be wary of slippery surfaces and icy patches, particularly in parks and similar areas where ground temperatures may facilitate freezing conditions.
Detailed Forecast and Potential Hazards
Dales elaborated on the potential weather threats, stating: There is a little bit of a threat on the back edge of that some freezing rain. If ground temperatures, particularly in the parks and these sort of places where there might be a bit of ice around. If the snow turns slightly more to sleet or rain as it crosses in, that can turn to freezing rain as it hits the surface.
He summarized the situation concisely: But in either case, snow, sleet, freezing rain: A) it won't last. B) it probably will not sit on on the surfaces and if it does, it won't last very long. London is always going to be that little bit less colder than elsewhere.
