Washington DC experienced the worst air quality of any major city globally after a 40-minute Independence Day fireworks show on Saturday night, with particulate matter concentrations soaring to 6.7 times pre-fireworks levels, according to an analysis by Clarity Movement. The display, which President Trump called “spectacular,” involved over 850,000 fireworks launched from 10 sites across the capital.
Code Red Alert Issued After Fireworks
Hourly concentrations of particulate matter peaked at 4am on Sunday, about five hours after the show ended, and remained elevated for another five hours, the analysis found. City officials issued a Code Red alert, warning that outdoor air quality was “unhealthy for seniors, kids, people with medical conditions” and that the general public might experience health issues.
Every one of the 26 air quality sensors deployed by Clarity Movement in partnership with the local department of energy and environment reached levels deemed “unhealthy for sensitive groups” by the Environmental Protection Agency. Some sensors recorded even worse emissions.
South-West DC Hit Hardest
The south-west region of DC experienced the highest pollution levels, likely due to its proximity to a fireworks launch site in West Potomac Park and overnight meteorological conditions that trapped smoke over the area. David Lu, CEO and co-founder of Clarity Movement, noted that the polluted air probably drifted into Arlington, Virginia, but no sensors were in place to confirm it.
“That’s exactly why expanding real-time air quality monitoring matters,” Lu said. “Without comprehensive coverage, communities can be exposed to significant pollution events that go undetected.”
Weather Helped Mitigate Worst-Case Scenario
Despite the scale of the display, thunderstorms on Sunday evening helped clear the air. “The city’s air quality avoided a worst-case scenario thanks to favorable weather conditions and the timing of the event,” Lu added.
The fireworks show, organized by the Trump-backed non-profit Freedom 250, began at 11pm on Saturday. A typical Independence Day show in DC uses just 17,000 shells. The event coincided with an extreme heatwave that brought triple-digit temperatures to the region earlier in the day.
Trump Administration Rolls Back Pollution Controls
The Trump administration has been rolling back pollution controls, exempting facilities from emissions regulations, boosting coal power, and halting consideration of the value of lives saved when restricting fine particulate matter and ozone. On July 4, Trump also pardoned nine individuals convicted of Clean Air Act violations, including those who tampered with emissions control equipment.
A White House spokesperson, Taylor Rogers, defended the display, stating, “It was the largest and greatest firework display in the history of our country to properly celebrate America’s 250th birthday! Every year, fireworks on the Fourth of July cause short-term spikes in air quality across the United States, including Washington, DC. This was not unique to the 250th fireworks celebrations in our nation’s capital.”
Americans shoot nearly 300 million pounds of fireworks into the atmosphere each year, releasing lung-harming gases such as sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide, according to the American Lung Association.
