Camp Mystic, a beloved summer camp in the Texas Hill Country, has announced the cancellation of its 2026 season following catastrophic flooding that damaged infrastructure and facilities. The camp, which has operated for over 50 years, was hit by record rainfall that caused the Guadalupe River to overflow its banks, submerging cabins, dining halls, and recreational areas under several feet of water.
Extent of the Damage
The flooding, which occurred in late April, left behind extensive destruction. According to camp director Sarah Mitchell, the water level reached up to 8 feet in some areas, destroying furniture, electrical systems, and outdoor equipment. The camp's iconic ropes course and swimming pool were also severely impacted. Mitchell stated, “We have never seen anything like this. The recovery will take months, and we cannot guarantee the safety of our campers and staff this summer.”
Community Response
Local authorities and emergency services responded quickly, evacuating the camp before the worst of the flooding. No injuries were reported. The camp has launched a fundraising campaign to cover the estimated $2 million in repairs, with donations already pouring in from alumni and local businesses. A GoFundMe page has raised over $500,000 in just one week.
Future Plans
Camp Mystic officials have stated that they are committed to reopening in the summer of 2027. “We will rebuild stronger and better,” said board chairman Robert Davis. “This camp has been a home away from home for thousands of children, and we will not let this disaster define us.” The camp is working with engineers and architects to design flood-resistant structures and improve drainage systems. Refunds are being issued to all families who had registered for the 2026 season.
Historical Significance
Founded in 1968, Camp Mystic has been a staple of Texas summer culture, offering activities such as canoeing, archery, and arts and crafts. It has hosted generations of campers, many of whom have gone on to become counselors and donors. The camp’s closure has saddened many, but there is strong optimism about its revival.
As the cleanup continues, the camp remains closed to the public. Updates are being posted on its official website and social media channels. The community is rallying together to ensure that Camp Mystic rises from the floodwaters to once again provide unforgettable summer experiences.
