Sir Alex Ferguson Backs 150 'Life-Changing' Scholarships at GCU
Sir Alex Ferguson Backs 150 GCU Scholarships

Footballing legend Sir Alex Ferguson is championing a major new initiative to create 150 life-changing scholarships for students from disadvantaged backgrounds at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU).

The former Manchester United manager, alongside alumnus Dr Murray Rowden, has personally pledged £500,000 to kickstart the campaign. This significant investment was announced as the university celebrates the 150th anniversary of its founding institution, the Glasgow School of Cookery, established in 1875.

A Unique Support Package for Students

The ambitious anniversary campaign aims to establish a comprehensive scholarship programme designed to widen access to higher education. Unlike standard bursaries, this initiative offers a holistic support package.

Each scholarship will provide a financial bursary, a travel award, an internship bursary, and crucially, access to a dedicated mentor throughout the student's entire degree programme.

Sir Alex, a founding donor of the GCU Foundation, stated: "I've witnessed first-hand the life-changing impact that scholarships, travel awards, and mentorship can have on young people."

"Bringing all of this support together in one unique package will give students not only the financial means but the confidence and encouragement they need to truly excel."

A Decade of Transformative Support

This new campaign builds upon a remarkable legacy of giving. The university revealed that in the 10 years since the GCU Foundation was launched, Sir Alex Ferguson has been instrumental in helping to raise more than £11 million for students from poorer backgrounds.

Reflecting on his motivation, the football icon said, "Giving young people a start in life is one of the greatest gifts we can offer, and one that has brought me immense pride and joy over the years." He ended with a call to action, expressing his hope that others would join him in backing the "extraordinary initiative."

Building a Legacy of Opportunity

The campaign was officially launched at an event on Monday night at the university's Glasgow campus. The gathering was hosted by GCU chancellor Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon and attended by Sir Alex, Dr Rowden, and various business leaders.

Dr Murray Rowden, whose own career was shaped by his time at GCU, explained his decision to contribute. "Glasgow Caledonian University has played a pivotal role in shaping both my career and my values," he said.

"The education I received, and the support I was given, opened doors I never imagined possible. Backing this campaign is my way of giving back to ensure that future students, regardless of their circumstances, have the same chance to succeed and make a difference."

This new scholarship fund represents a significant step in the university's ongoing commitment to social mobility, ensuring that financial background is not a barrier to achieving academic excellence and a promising future.
