Teenager Arrested Following Incident Involving Spiked Vape on School Transport
A teenage boy has been arrested on suspicion of drug supply offences after a Year 8 pupil was reportedly given a spiked vape while travelling to school. The incident occurred on a school bus en route to North Gosforth Academy in Seaton Burn, Northumbria, last Wednesday morning.
Parental Warning Issued After Disturbing Episode
The affected boy's parents described their son as being 'totally out of it' after trying the vape. Emergency services were called to the Dudley area of North Tyneside at approximately 8.30am on February 4 following reports concerning a teenager's welfare.
The pupil was transported to hospital for assessment but was fortunately discharged later the same day. Northumbria Police have confirmed that a teenage boy was subsequently arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of class B drugs and has been released on police bail pending further investigation.
Growing Concerns About Vape Spiking Phenomenon
The boy's father has issued a stark warning to other parents and children about the potential dangers associated with vaping, particularly the emerging risk of spiking. 'It seems a lot of youngsters are vaping now,' he told local media. 'I want to create awareness around the borough for parents and kids with vapes.'
This incident reflects a worrying national trend, with authorities reporting more than 6,700 cases of suspected vape spiking in England and Wales during just the first half of 2023. Experts note that substances like THC or synthetic cannabinoids such as spice are sometimes being added to vapes without users' knowledge.
Limited Understanding of New Threat
Helena Conibear, chief executive of the Alcohol Education Trust, highlighted the challenges in addressing this emerging issue: 'Very little is known about vape spiking as it is a new phenomenon. We are very much in the dark about how it operates.'
Northumbria Police have appealed for anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward to assist their ongoing investigation. The force spokesperson emphasised their commitment to addressing drug-related offences within the community.
This case follows several reports from victims who have spoken publicly about traumatic experiences with spiked vapes, calling for greater awareness and preventative action to protect young people from this hidden danger.
