May 15 Deadline for Student Finance Applications in England
May 15 Student Finance Deadline for England Students

Students across England are being reminded of an important deadline for student finance applications. With just over a week left, new students starting university in September 2026 must apply by May 15, 2026, to guarantee their funding is in place for the start of term.

Record Number of Applications

Data from UCAS shows a record 338,940 UK 18-year-olds applied by the January 2026 deadline, a 4.8% increase from the previous year. In the 2024/25 academic year, around 2.86 million students were studying at UK colleges and universities, including over two million undergraduates and nearly 900,000 postgraduates.

Deadline Details

According to a statement on Gov.uk released on May 7, new students should apply before the deadline to ensure their funding is ready. The statement emphasizes that applying late could delay payments for rent, books, and social activities like Freshers' Week.

Parents and partners of new students must also submit their details by the deadline to avoid delays or reductions in funding.

What is Student Finance?

UK student finance is a government-backed scheme to help students pay tuition fees and living costs. It includes a Tuition Fee Loan paid directly to the institution and a Maintenance Loan for living expenses. Loans are repaid only after graduation and once income exceeds a certain threshold.

Additional support may be available for those on low incomes, with disabilities, or with dependent children. Student finance is also accessible to some non-UK students. From January 2027, new rules will apply to courses starting on or after that date.

Repayments are based on earnings, not the total borrowed. Interest accrues from the date of payment. Student loans do not affect credit reports, but lenders may consider them in affordability assessments.

How to Apply

Students can apply through the Gov.uk website, which provides comprehensive guides to make the process smooth. Existing account holders can sign in and submit their application before the deadline.
