British cyclist Finlay Tarling, aged 19, has died following a crash during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal, race organisers confirmed on Friday. The teenager, riding for the NSN Development Team, was involved in an accident on the 166.8km route from Melgaco to Fafe. The organisation of the 87th Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta Jogos Santa Casa issued a statement expressing deep regret. “The organisation of the 87th Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta Jogos Santa Casa deeply regrets to announce the passing of British cyclist Finlay Tarling, from the NSN Development Team, following a serious accident that occurred during the 8th stage of the race,” the statement read.
“At this moment of profound dismay, the organisation of the Volta a Portugal and the Portuguese Cycling Federation express their most heartfelt condolences to the family of Finlay Tarling, to his teammates, to the NSN Development Team, and to all his friends and loved ones.” The statement added that the race would be neutralized until reaching Fafe and that the podium ceremony scheduled for the day would not take place. “The organization will provide all additional information as soon as conditions allow it to do so,” it concluded.

While race organisers did not specify the nature of the accident, Portuguese broadcaster RTP, which was televising the event, reported that Tarling was involved in a collision with a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction and not connected to the race. The incident occurred during the stage, prompting immediate neutralization.
Tarling, a Welsh rider, was the younger brother of Josh Tarling, who rides for the Netcompany Ineos team. Finlay had represented Great Britain on both road and track, and had won three bronze medals at the 2024 UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships in China.

In a separate statement, NSN Cycling Team expressed their grief. “We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal today,” the team said. “Fin was a much loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many.
