For a limited period, art collectors and photography enthusiasts have a unique opportunity to own a piece of a major new contemporary series. Award-winning documentary photographer Mimi Mollica is releasing a numbered and signed edition of prints from his latest project, Moon City, with the sale concluding on 8 December.
The Vision Behind Moon City
Mollica, known for his work exploring identity and social change, spent more than five years creating this profound body of work. Moon City is a co-publication with Dewi Lewis Publishing and represents a poetic and urgent meditation on modern life. The series masterfully captures the tension between the ancient, gravitational pull of the moon and the relentless, ambitious energy of London's financial skyline.
The photographer employed an innovative technique, overlaying images of the lunar surface with scenes of people navigating the city's streets. These composite images were captured using a combination of telescope and mobile phone, creating a unique visual dialogue between the cosmic and the urban.
A Photographer's Personal Favourites
Mollica provides rare insight into the creation of several key images from the series. He recalls the morning he captured Moon City Series – 01, a shot where everything fell perfectly into place, contrasting with the usual need for patience and precision.
Another image, Moon City Series – 02, showcases the phenomenon of 'Earthshine'—the dim glow on the moon's dark side caused by sunlight reflected from our planet. Mollica describes taking this photo during the intense and stressful crowdfunding campaign for the book, noting how the moon became a companion throughout the five-year project.
The photograph selected for the book's cover, Moon City Series – 03, features lens aberration from his telescope creating a glare around a building. The artist interprets these light flares as radio waves, highlighting the underlying tension between the metropolis and the cosmos.
Of Moon City Series – 04, Mollica says it is one of his cleanest and most eloquent images, whose colour palette reminds him of the NASA photographs that first sparked his love for astrophysics. He expresses particular pride in Moon City Series – 05, a challenging shot of a British Airways plane silhouetted against a half-moon, where the speed of objects passing through the telescope's view made the capture exceptionally difficult.
