Hussein Abdirahman Mohamud's latest photographic publication, STREET, offers a compelling and intimate glimpse into the daily lives of Melbourne's residents in the aftermath of the Covid-19 lockdowns. This zine, which launched on 31 January 2026, is published by the Centre for Contemporary Photography and Perimeter Editions as part of their CCP.PE.ZINE series, a platform dedicated to showcasing the work of young and emerging Australian photographers.
A Snapshot of Urban Transformation
The collection brings together a series of portraits and candid images that document people moving through a city undergoing significant and visible change. Mohamud, a photographer, writer, and psychoanalyst in training based in Naarm / Melbourne, describes the photographs as emerging from time spent walking and responding to spontaneous interactions, rather than from staged or planned shoots.
Fleeting Encounters and Imperfect Moments
In his own words, Mohamud explains that some images result from brief encounters where a person, a gesture, or a pause in movement aligns just long enough to be captured. Others are more like portraits, taken after a brief exchange with an individual. He emphasises that these pictures operate as fragments, reflecting how daily life is often experienced: in passing, in transition, and frequently without resolution.
The photographs have been selected from thousands taken over recent years, providing what Mohamud calls an imperfect snapshot of fleeting encounters with people momentarily fixed into photographs. This approach lends the work an authentic and raw quality, capturing the essence of Melbourne at a specific moment in time.
Supporting Emerging Artistic Talent
The CCP.PE.ZINE series is specifically designed to offer a platform for emerging photographic artists to exhibit their work in an accessible zine format. Each publication in the series focuses on a single body of work by artists carefully selected by the Centre for Contemporary Photography, highlighting the diversity and innovation within Australia's contemporary art scene.
STREET stands as a testament to this mission, presenting Mohamud's unique perspective on urban life and human connection in a post-pandemic world. The zine is available now, inviting viewers to explore the wild and wonderful people of Melbourne through his lens.
