This new column is dedicated to celebrating London's finest drinking establishments, the pubs and bars that keep the capital's social scene thriving, even amidst challenging economic times and governmental pressures that threaten their survival.
A Shift from Victorian Grandeur to Modern Elegance
Last week, the focus was on The Rising Sun, a Victorian gin palace that earned our prestigious Best Boozer award. This week, the spotlight turns to Three Sheets in Soho, which offers a stark contrast to that historic venue. As a long-time admirer of Three Sheets, having enjoyed many memorable evenings at its original Dalston location, I was eager to experience its Soho counterpart.
Location and Ambiance
Three Sheets Soho is nestled down a charming alleyway, just a short walk from Tottenham Court Road and Soho Square. Upon approach, you'll often see cheerful patrons gathered under the archway that connects Charing Cross Road and Greek Street. The entrance is framed by Victorian tiles, providing a subtle nod to history within an otherwise thoroughly modern cocktail bar setting.
The Vibrant Atmosphere
I visited on a bustling Friday evening, but Three Sheets maintains a lively and energetic vibe regardless of when you go. Recognised as one of London's premier cocktail bars, booking in advance is highly recommended to secure a spot. Inside, stylish guests sit at the elegant marble bar, sipping on expertly crafted cocktails. Our bartender, Cameron, was both skilled and personable, presenting a concise yet inventive menu that features creative twists on classic drinks and unique house specialities.
Must-Try Cocktails from the Menu
I began the evening with a 'bramble' cocktail, a delightful blend of blackberry, framboise, gin, grape, and beetroot. Served as a clear liquid with a large ice cube floating atop, it was adorned with a vivid purple pool. The taste evoked images of a summer orchard, a serene woodland walk, and relaxing by a riverside—it was absolutely delicious and went down smoothly.
Next, I ventured into a more experimental choice with a whisky soda 2.0, a bold reinterpretation of the traditional whisky soda. This concoction included tonka, mallow root, clear milk (milk curdled with acid and strained), whisky, and soda. While it was overly sweet for my palate, reminiscent of childhood ice cream sodas now likely restricted due to sugar regulations, it was undeniably intriguing and showcased the bar's innovative spirit.
To conclude the night, I indulged in an impeccably mixed olive martini, which was as filthy as it was flawless. This drink provided the perfect finish, leaving me with a pleasant glow as I stepped out into the vibrant streets of Soho.
Three Sheets Soho truly lives up to its reputation as a top-tier destination for cocktail enthusiasts. With its blend of historical touches and contemporary flair, it's a must-visit spot in London's nightlife. Make sure to book your table promptly to experience this exceptional bar for yourself.
