Across its 70-year history, the Eurovision Song Contest has always been known for surprises. But nobody, not even the most dedicated fans, could have predicted the appearance of Hollywood star Will Ferrell during a segment on the BBC broadcast.

A Star-Studded Celebration

To mark the 70th anniversary of the iconic competition, the organizers pulled out all the stops to celebrate this landmark milestone. The show opened with an emotional tribute reflecting on seven decades of Eurovision history, leaving many viewers in tears. Following that heartfelt introduction, the broadcast featured a series of video messages from contestants and fans around the world.

As each person shared what Eurovision meant to them, the 58-year-old actor, best known for his role in Step Brothers, made a surprise cameo. In a brief clip, Ferrell said: “One word for Eurovision? Let me think… what could it be? I know, joy!”

Social media erupted with excitement following the unexpected appearance. I’ve probably watched it like 8 times and it still feels like not enough.” Ava echoed the sentiment, posting: “Will Ferrell cameo is INSANE #Eurovision.”

Ferrell’s Eurovision Connection

Despite the shock, Ferrell has a well-known history with Eurovision. He starred in and co-wrote the Netflix musical comedy Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, where he played Lars, an Icelandic singer competing in the contest alongside Sigrit, portrayed by Rachel McAdams. A devoted fan of the show, Ferrell attended the live events in 2018 and 2019. Recently, it was announced that the film would be adapted into a Broadway musical. Discussing the project, Ferrell told Radio Times: “We are more than excited to bring Eurovision to Broadway. The stage musical is a perfect place to continue our celebration of all the things we love about this amazing and unifying song competition.”

The Eurovision Song Contest 2026 final will air on BBC on Saturday, May 16, 2026.
