Across its 70-year history, the Eurovision Song Contest has always been known for surprises. But not even the most devoted fans could have anticipated the appearance of Hollywood star Will Ferrell during a segment on the BBC broadcast.
A Milestone Celebration
To mark the 70th anniversary, the competition pulled out all the stops. The show opened with an emotional tribute to seven decades of Eurovision, leaving many viewers in tears. Following that, a series of video messages from contestants and fans were shown.
As each person reflected on what Eurovision meant to them, the 58-year-old Step Brothers star suddenly appeared in a short clip. He said: 'One word for Eurovision? Let me think… what could it be? I know, joy!'
Fan Reactions
Social media erupted with excitement. @superTV247 wrote on X: 'Yes that is Will Ferrell and yes this is still #Eurovision.' Another user, Wiesel, commented: 'This is just plain crazy, that Will Ferrell was here to switch on.'
David added: 'How great to see Will Ferrell at this #EuroSemi1 in Vienna, even if it’s through a video, evoking his character in that hilarious #Eurovision tribute movie. I’ve probably watched it like 8 times and it still feels like not enough.' Ava echoed the sentiment: 'Will Ferrell cameo is INSANE #Eurovision.'
Ferrell's Eurovision Connection
Despite the shock, Ferrell has a deep history with the contest. He starred in and co-wrote the Netflix musical comedy Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, playing Icelandic singer Lars alongside Rachel McAdams as Sigrit. The film follows their journey representing Iceland in the contest.
Having attended Eurovision in 2018 and 2019, Ferrell is a genuine fan. Recently, it was announced that the film would be adapted into a Broadway musical. He told Radio Times: 'We are more than excited to bring Eurovision to Broadway. The stage musical is a perfect place to continue our celebration of all the things we love about this amazing and unifying song competition.'
The Eurovision Song Contest 2026 final airs on BBC on Saturday, May 16, 2026.
