Jim Geoghan, the co-creator of Disney Channel's hit series The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, has died at the age of 79. His daughter, Genevieve Geoghan, confirmed the news, though no cause of death has been disclosed.
Career from stand-up to sitcoms
Geoghan began his career in stand-up comedy before moving into television writing and producing. Over nearly three decades, he worked on American series including Three's Company, The Van Dyke Show, and Family Matters.
In 2005, after almost 30 years in the industry, he co-created and co-executive produced a Disney Channel series about twins living in a hotel. The show, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, ran for 87 episodes from 2005 to 2008 and earned two Emmy nominations.
Franchise expansion and legacy
The success of the original series led to a sequel, Suite Life on Deck, which aired until 2011. Geoghan also wrote the 2011 feature film The Suite Life Movie and served as executive producer on the Indian adaptation, The Suite Life of Karan & Kabir.
The franchise helped launch the careers of Dylan and Cole Sprouse, Ashley Tisdale, and Brenda Song, and became one of Disney Channel's most popular properties. During its run, the show featured crossover episodes with Hannah Montana and That's So Raven, as well as cameos from stars like Zac Efron. In a notable cameo, Oscar winner Emma Stone reportedly voiced London Tipton's dog in one episode.

Fans have taken to X to share tributes, thanking Geoghan for contributing to their childhood. One user, Chiara, wrote, "Oh God, a piece of my childhood flies away with him," while Giovanny added, "RIP to this legend." Another fan, Dani, said, "HE WAS THE ? thank you for giving me one of the best shows of my childhood rip." CJ posted, "Salute to a legend that shaped our childhood."
Kim Rhodes, who played the twins' mother Carey on The Suite Life, paid tribute on Instagram, writing: "This is Jim Geoghan, one of the most incredible humans this world has ever seen and he is no longer among us. He was one of the creators of, 'The Suite Life of Zack and Cody', if you've ever heard me talk about my favorite episode, you've heard me talk about him."
She continued: "The one about motherhood when Cody learns to let a bird fly free was written by Jim. He was a big man with a loud laugh and a jolly manner, not given to moments of obviously vulnerable connection at work. But he wrote that for me after my mother died, as a gift. Possibly the greatest kindness anyone has ever done me."
Beyond television, Geoghan wrote an Off-Broadway stand-up comedy play called Only Kidding, which was nominated for two Drama Desk Awards and toured the US. His death marks the loss of a figure whose work shaped a generation of Disney Channel viewers.
