CBS announced the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last July, with the final episode airing on 21 May. The show, which ran for 11 years under Colbert's hosting, was a staple of late-night television.
A Legacy of Late-Night Television
The show was originally created by David Letterman in 1993 after his departure from NBC. Letterman hosted for 22 years before retiring and passing the torch to Colbert, who had gained fame on Comedy Central as a correspondent on The Daily Show.
Reasons for Cancellation
Executives stated that the decision to cancel was purely financial, despite The Late Show holding the highest ratings for any late-night talk show for nine consecutive years. However, many observers interpreted the move as a political gesture toward Donald Trump, coinciding with a merger between Skydance and CBS’s parent company, Paramount.
