In the frantic search for the next big reality TV hit after The Traitors, broadcasters have churned out countless imitators. Yet, according to one critic, Netflix holds the only worthy rival—a show that remains virtually unknown: Million Dollar Secret.
A Hidden Gem on Netflix
Now in its second season, which premiered this month with little promotion, Million Dollar Secret is not even among Netflix's top 10. Hosted by British comedian Peter Serafinowicz, the show features 12 strangers at a Canadian chateau. Each player receives a box, but only one contains $1 million in cash. The secret millionaire must complete missions to earn a 'kill shot' while avoiding exposure. Failure leads to penalties, including automatic nominations at dinner when the group votes on who holds the cash.
Gameplay and Tension
The premise is similar to ITV's The Fortune Hotel, which was canceled after two seasons. However, Million Dollar Secret has players working individually, heightening the isolation and pressure. Challenges include standing beside a chosen contestant for 45 minutes without suspicion or attaching clothes pegs to three players unnoticed. These tasks create intense television as the millionaire struggles to keep their secret.
Netflix's track record with competition shows is lackluster, with duds like Age of Attraction. Even Squid Game: The Challenge failed to generate significant buzz. Yet Million Dollar Secret stands out as a compelling exception. The first season earned a devoted following, but the second season's arrival went largely unnoticed, even by television journalists.
Comparison with Other Shows
ITV's The Neighbourhood, hosted by Graham Norton, launched recently but saw ratings plummet after three episodes. Channel 4's The Hunt also disappointed. In contrast, Million Dollar Secret captures the essence of The Traitors—betrayal and tension—but Netflix seems uninterested in promoting it. The critic laments that the streaming giant is burying this gold mine under mediocre content.
With Netflix's cutthroat approach to programming, a third season seems unlikely. The loss will be felt by fans awaiting the next trip to the Highlands for The Traitors. For now, Million Dollar Secret remains the closest rival, hidden in plain sight.
