Jon Stewart returned to The Daily Show on Tuesday evening after a month-long break, delivering a scathing recap of Donald Trump's August activities. The comedian highlighted a series of actions that he described as a "relentless denial of reality," including rolling back childhood vaccine requirements, attacking mail-in voting, threatening to demolish the Kennedy Center, and suggesting bombing American allies such as Oman and all of Iran.
Stewart's Exasperation with Trump's August Actions
"God, it never ends with this dude Trump," Stewart lamented. "I've never seen one person work so much and fix so little. It's exhausting in a way that's difficult to articulate." This sentiment was underscored by one particular story from August that stuck with Stewart: the plight of the USS Abraham Lincoln.
The aircraft carrier, carrying more than 5,000 US sailors and marines, recently docked in Thailand after 286 days at sea, visibly rusted and corroded by the elements. Stewart used this as a metaphor for the nation's state under the current presidency. "This is what we look like as Americans inside after 18 months of this presidency," he joked, pointing to a photo of the run-down ship. "I want you to think about the visible, tangible, actual, indisputable, factual signs of corrosion on this ship."
Trump, however, claimed the ship was "beautifully maintained and beautifully taken care of." Stewart countered, "It's not! The actual Abraham Lincoln is in better shape than this ship! A 'beautifully maintained, beautifully taken care of' ship doesn't look like the abandoned bridge near my high school where we used to smoke weed."
The Meme War and Canada Trolling
Stewart also addressed Trump's meme war, specifically the viral clip of Trump crossing out "Lake Ontario" and writing "Lake America" in Sharpie, posted to official government accounts amid escalating trade tensions with Canada. "Please make it stop," a fatigued Stewart pleaded. "You can't, that's not how things work! You don't settle complicated international agreements by writing just a new name on the map and expecting everyone to just follow along."
"Why are we trolling them?" he wondered of the administration's needling of Canada. "Is that the plan? To troll them into submission?"
Natalie Harp and the Filter of Reality
Later in the segment, Stewart explored a factor contributing to Trump's delusion: the role of White House aide Natalie Harp, whose job is to reinforce his reality. "Donald Trump has an aide whose whole job is to reinforce his warped reality," Stewart explained, before playing a news clip about Harp sending Trump "love letters."
"This is unbelievable," Stewart continued. "The outside world is somehow fed into this woman – a single conduit. And from there, she is the filter to all the information that is directly fed into Donald Trump's psyche." Stewart then played a doctored version of the viral trailer for Nathan Fielder's upcoming documentary on Elizabeth Holmes, with Trump's face superimposed on Fielder's body, as the convicted fraudster asks: "Why would I deceive you? There's no reason for me to do that."
Jimmy Kimmel's 4,000th Show and a Nation Unchanged
In Los Angeles, Jimmy Kimmel returned from his summer holiday for his 4,000th show since it premiered in February 2003. "It's a lot of shows," he acknowledged. "According to the White House, it's too many shows." He also shouted out critics, referencing those who used "the regulatory might of the FCC to unconstitutionally try to make sure we didn't last this long."
Kimmel recapped the state of the country when he left in June: an algae-infested Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool, war with Iran, high gas prices, inflation, and uncertainty over Mitch McConnell's health. Three months later, little had changed. "Are you telling me the president of the United States had three full months and spent $20m and couldn't even get a pool cleaned?" Kimmel quipped. "How are we supposed to win the war in Iran if we can't even win the war against algae?"
More recently, Trump posted 37 times on Truth Social in a single Sunday, including a video renaming New Mexico "New America"—a move the federal government has no authority to make. "Listen, if there was a new America, we'd all go there immediately," Kimmel joked. "As if the people in New Mexico don't already have enough on their plate, trying to spell the word 'Albuquerque'. Now they have to deal with this."
