The Half Moon, an iconic pub in South London that has hosted legendary acts such as Ed Sheeran, Kate Bush, and The Who, has reopened after a significant three-month refurbishment. Located in Herne Hill, the pub has been a cornerstone of the local music scene since 1963.
A Historic Venue Revitalized
Since 1963, The Half Moon has served as the beating heart of the social and music scene in Herne Hill, hosting generations of gigs and serving as a hub for music lovers and locals. The venue has welcomed icons such as The Rolling Stones, Kate Bush, and Ed Sheeran. The historic pub now blends its rich musical heritage with a refreshed design, featuring a brand-new first-floor dining space and a menu inspired by Deep South Americana.
The pub's history dates back to 1903, and it began hosting live music in 1963. It quickly became a popular spot for up-and-coming artists as well as established icons. The 250-capacity venue has seen performances from The Rolling Stones and many others.
Refurbished Interiors and Features
After three months of renovations, the new-look pub retains its retro features while boasting a refreshed appearance. The ground-floor bar strikes a perfect balance between rustic charm and a love of music, with exposed brickwork, stripped-back timber, and worn leather chairs creating a welcoming, lived-in vibe. Framed instruments, iconic albums, and neon signage celebrate the pub's storied past.
Staying true to its roots, the pub continues to host nine shows a week, remaining a definitive place to see rising stars such as Lola Young and The Molotovs Outside. The spruced-up beer garden features new furniture and vibrant murals, perfect for enjoying sunny days.
New Dining and Entertainment Spaces
The new space includes black-and-white diamond flooring and music-themed detailing, with artwork that pays homage to live performers. A cinema-style overbar adds retro flair, while the stage, framed by a fresh red velvet curtain, keeps every act firmly in the spotlight. Upstairs, the bar and terrace take centre stage. The first floor has been reimagined as a premium social and dining destination, flowing seamlessly into the new rooftop terrace, a versatile indoor-outdoor space.
Updated Menu and Drinks
The updated menu features pub classics as well as scorched cauliflower croquettes with salsa. The beer selection includes craft beers and cocktails, with offerings from South London-based independent brewery Gipsy Hill and popular fruit lager Jubel.
A Resilient History
In 2013, the pub suffered severe flooding that nearly spelled its end, leading to a four-year closure. After a local campaign and an online petition signed by over 6,000 people, the pub reopened in 2017. With this latest refurbishment, The Half Moon is set to continue providing a space for locals and visitors to enjoy for years to come.
The Half Moon is open all week. From Sunday to Thursday, it is open from 12 pm to 11 pm. On Fridays and Saturdays, it is open from 11 am to midnight. It is located at 93 Lower Richmond Rd., London SW15 1EU.
