EastEnders fans are urging show bosses to bring back an iconic character following her emotional exit this week. Julie Bates, played by Karen Henthorn, made a return to Walford last year as part of Nigel Bates' dementia storyline. Nigel initially kept his diagnosis from Julie, but she later arrived and became a pillar of support for Phil Mitchell as he vowed to stay by Nigel's side until the end.
Julie and Phil bid farewell to Nigel last month, and this week, loved ones gathered for Nigel's funeral. The event saw the return of his daughter Clare, played by Gemma Bissix, and Julie's son Josh, played by Jon Lee. The following day, Julie read a letter Nigel had written before his dementia took hold. In it, he left her funds to fulfill their dream of traveling to India. He wrote, 'I want you to go to India and to live for me. Thank you for being my wife. You were my world. I love you. Be happy.'
Phil reached out to console Julie and offered to take her to the Vic to celebrate. However, as others discussed a farewell party, Julie quietly slipped out, leaving Phil a goodbye note. Phil rushed to the Tube and caught her just in time. Julie thanked him for his care, and they shared a hug, parting on good terms as Julie urged Phil to look to the future in Nigel's memory.
Fans took to social media platform X after the emotional week. Many expressed hope that Julie would return.
